Investing in Culinary Development to Ensure Crew Wellbeing

Date: 17 June 2025

Garrets enhances focus on improving the lives of vessel crew by expanding culinary development team to provide greater support to on-board cooks and stewards.

Good food is more than a daily necessity and has a significant impact on crew wellbeing. It contributes to physical and emotional health and can be a cultural anchor and a source of comfort as well.

To add another level in supporting our customers with quality food and culinary care, we’ve recently expanded our culinary development team through expert leadership and education. By improving crew wellbeing on board, our customers ensure crew satisfaction, higher retention and performance on board.

Vessel Support Led by Culinary Excellence

Head of Culinary Development

A new Head of Culinary Development, Luwell Elisan commenced in May and has already visited vessels and been involved in training cooks at Garrets’ training facility in Manila.

I’m inspired by diverse cuisines when creating imaginative menus, and I keep a strong focus on kitchen workflow optimisation and costs to enhance the overall customer satisfaction,” says Luwell.

Luwell has more than 18 years of experience in the hospitality industry, counting employment at recognised international hotel restaurants. He has specialized in kitchen management and culinary excellence through innovative menu development and high-quality food preparation.

Luwell joins our global team based in Manila, leading activities in recipe development, budget management, menu planning and training to support improved crew welfare on board our customers’ vessels.

Improved Culinary Outcomes on Board

Diana - Culinary Graduate

With our continued focus on improving culinary outcomes onboard customer fleets to ensure crew wellbeing, we’ve enhanced the culinary credentials of our team.

Our Head of Superintendents, Diana Rose Lumot has spent several months attending a culinary programme at the University of the Philippines BCG, learning the fundamentals of culinary arts.

As a Culinary Graduate, Diana takes Garrets’ vessel support services to another level, improving training and guidance services to galley cooks and crew. During our training programmes and vessel visits, cooks and stewards receive in-person support from our global vessel support team.
